UTSA and Colorado State traded big plays and momentum swings in a high-scoring matchup, but the Roadrunners’ ability to generate explosive plays on the ground ultimately became one of the defining features of the game.
Colorado State made the first major statement when quarterback Quesan Ferrar connected with Terrence Smith for a 74-yard touchdown on the Rams’ first offensive play. The quick strike helped Colorado State establish an early advantage while UTSA initially struggled to finish its opportunities, including a missed field-goal attempt.
The Roadrunners soon found their rhythm behind the running game. Brandon High Jr. broke loose for several productive carries before powering into the end zone behind strong blocking. Will Henderson added another dimension, using his speed on the outside to break free for a touchdown as UTSA began consistently finding openings in the Colorado State defense.
The explosive plays continued when DJ Allen Jr. found open space down the sideline, helping UTSA extend its advantage. Later, the Roadrunners put together a 59-yard scoring drive that ended with a five-yard touchdown run, another example of their ability to produce on the ground when Colorado State needed a stop.
Colorado State remained competitive behind Ferrar and its running game. The Rams began sustaining longer drives and finding receivers underneath and downfield, but penalties and pressure from the UTSA defense repeatedly made those possessions more difficult. Colorado State entered the game as one of the nation’s less-penalized teams, making its unusually high number of flags particularly costly.
The Rams continued pushing back in the second half, producing scoring opportunities and trying to narrow the margin. Special teams contributed late, including a successful field goal and a 51-yard kick as Colorado State attempted to stay within striking distance.
In the end, the game was shaped by UTSA’s ability to turn routine opportunities into substantial gains. The Roadrunners combined speed on the perimeter with productive inside running and timely defensive pressure, giving Colorado State little room for error as the game progressed.
