The Houston Texans earned their first victory of the season with a convincing 26-3 win over the Tennessee Titans in Nashville, combining an effective second-half offense with a defensive performance that kept Tennessee out of the end zone.
Quarterback C.J. Stroud accounted for two touchdowns, while Houston's defense forced turnovers and consistently pressured Titans rookie quarterback Cam Ward.
Tennessee opened with promise. Ward connected with Calvin Ridley for a 23-yard gain, and running back Tony Pollard broke into the Houston secondary to move the Titans into scoring position.
The drive stalled near the goal line, however, forcing Tennessee to settle for a short field goal and an early 3-0 lead.
Houston answered behind Stroud, who connected with tight end Dalton Schultz and receiver Xavier Hutchinson on consecutive completions. The Texans moved into Tennessee territory before their possession ended with a 45-yard field goal by Ka'imi Fairbairn.
The Texans' defense soon began creating additional opportunities.
A Tennessee fumble gave Houston possession, although the Titans' defense prevented a touchdown. Fairbairn converted from 35 yards to put the Texans ahead 6-3.
On Tennessee's next possession, Ward threw an interception to Jake Hansen, who recorded his first career interception and returned the football to give Houston another scoring opportunity.
Stroud moved the Texans into the red zone with completions to Schultz and Hutchinson, but Tennessee again held firm. Fairbairn added a 26-yard field goal, extending Houston's advantage to 9-3.
Houston continued controlling field position, and Fairbairn connected from 53 yards to give the Texans a 12-3 lead.
The game's momentum shifted decisively when Houston finally began turning productive possessions into touchdowns.
Stroud directed a sustained drive featuring completions to Nico Collins and several other receivers. He finished the possession himself, keeping the football on a designed run and reaching the end zone behind effective blocking.
The touchdown extended Houston's lead and rewarded an offense that had previously relied entirely on field goals.
The Texans added another touchdown when Stroud escaped pressure and found rookie receiver Jaylin Noel in the back of the end zone.
Noel maintained control of the football while keeping it away from the defender, completing an impressive catch that effectively put the game beyond Tennessee's reach.
Houston's defense ensured there would be no comeback.
Pass rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter repeatedly disrupted Ward's passing attempts, while the Texans' secondary limited Tennessee's opportunities for substantial gains.
Anderson was particularly effective, finishing with three sacks. His final sack came on fourth-and-19, ending one of Tennessee's last possessions and underscoring Houston's defensive dominance.
The Titans managed occasional completions to Ridley and other receivers, but their offense never established the consistency necessary to challenge Houston's lead.
For Texans coach DeMeco Ryans, the victory provided a welcome response after a difficult start to the season.
Houston demonstrated that its defense could create scoring opportunities while Stroud and the offense gradually found their rhythm.
The 26-3 result gave the Texans their first win and left Tennessee searching for answers after another defeat.
More importantly for Houston, the performance offered evidence that its combination of quarterback play, defensive pressure and improved offensive execution could provide a foundation for better results moving forward.
