San Diego State survived a late Texas State comeback attempt and turned a tipped pass into a decisive pick-six to secure a victory in a game filled with turnovers, special-teams plays and momentum swings.
Texas State quarterback Brad Jackson helped the Bobcats strike early, finding a wide-open receiver for a 21-yard touchdown before adding another score on a short scramble. But San Diego State's defense and special teams began creating opportunities of their own, including a blocked field-goal attempt by linebacker Cameron Cooper.
The Aztecs then produced one of the game's biggest plays when Jaylen Hawkins took a kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. Hawkins followed a wall of blockers before breaking down the sideline, providing San Diego State with an immediate momentum boost.
That momentum continued when Jackson threw an interception to Chris Johnson, giving the Aztecs the ball near the Texas State 10. San Diego State quickly capitalized, with Josiah Lucas reaching the end zone for his first career touchdown. The moment was particularly notable for Lucas, who had been working with the scout team only a week earlier.
Texas State's problems continued when a mishandled snap gave San Diego State possession inside the red zone. Lucas again finished the opportunity, running untouched into the end zone for another touchdown.
The Bobcats remained within striking distance, however, and their defense produced a critical sequence with San Diego State backed up near its own goal line.
Initially, Texas State appeared to have recorded a safety, but replay upheld the ruling that Lucas had gotten the football out of the end zone. On the next play, another mishandled exchange left the Aztecs in trouble. This time, quarterback Jayden Denegal was ruled down in the end zone for a safety.
The two points reduced San Diego State's advantage from four to two, putting Texas State in position to potentially win the game with a field goal.
Instead, the Aztecs defense delivered the defining play.
Jackson attempted a quick pass, but Cooper got his hands into the passing lane and deflected the football. The tipped pass was intercepted and returned 32 yards for a touchdown, giving San Diego State the separation it needed in the closing minutes.
Texas State still had one final opportunity. Jackson connected on a 40-yard pass down the left sideline to move the Bobcats quickly downfield. With San Diego State protecting the goal line, Jackson scrambled and eventually launched one final throw toward the end zone.
The pass was knocked down, ending the comeback attempt.
For San Diego State, the victory was built less on sustained offensive dominance than on taking advantage of opportunities. A kickoff return, turnovers, short fields and the late defensive touchdown proved enough to withstand Texas State's final push and give the Aztecs their first Pac-12 victory.
