Celebrating Young Changemakers: Nominations Open for Champions for Change
San Antonio is full of inspiring stories of young leaders, and the Methodist Children's Hospital is honoring these children with its annual Champions for Change program. KENS 5 is at the forefront of this heartwarming initiative, which highlights the leadership, compassion, and selflessness exhibited by kids aged 8 to 18. Nominations for the 2025 class are open until May 11, 2025.
Who Are the Champions for Change?
The Champions for Change program was established in memory of Rowan Windham, a young patient who showcased remarkable resilience despite the challenges of a rare genetic disorder. For over 1,500 days, Rowan battled through numerous health trials, leaving a lasting impact on those around him. His story is a poignant reminder of the strength children can embody, inspiring others to take action for good. This initiative seeks to recognize young individuals who have similarly committed themselves to making a difference, whether through volunteering, awareness campaigns, or their own personal advocacy.
How to Nominate a Champion
Parents, teachers, and school staff are encouraged to submit nominations for outstanding young individuals who are dedicated to making a difference. Ideal candidates are those who have demonstrated significant leadership skills, altruism, and commitment to community service. Examples of ideal nominees might include children who have stood up against bullying, initiated projects that address child hunger, or engaged in community service to support the homeless population.
Incentives for the Recognized Champions
The honor of being named a Champion for Change comes with more than just recognition. Winners will be celebrated at a special breakfast event on June 6, 2025. In addition to the experience of being publicly applauded for their efforts, each champion will receive $250 to donate to a charity of their choice, as long as it is recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization. Alongside this, they will also receive a Raising Cane’s prize pack and the exciting opportunity for a behind-the-scenes tour of the KENS 5 newsroom.
The Legacy of Rowan Windham
Rowan Windham’s legacy lives on through these awards, with his spirit from childhood encouraging children today to realize their potential for doing good. The program’s creation serves not only as a tribute to Rowan but also as a call to action for the community to recognize the change-makers among them. Nominating a Champion isn’t just about the recognition—it’s about showcasing the resilience and heart found in San Antonio’s younger generations.
Join Together to Celebrate Our Youth
As nominations are accepted through May 11, community members are invited to participate in this celebration of youth. The Champions for Change program is a powerful reminder of how even young individuals can affect significant change in their communities. Moreover, it sets an encouraging example for future generations about the importance of giving back and standing up for what is right.
