Florida Atlantic delivered a dominant offensive performance Thursday night, scoring 60 points in a victory over UTSA that handed the Roadrunners their first American Conference loss of the season.
The Owls combined explosive passing plays, a surprisingly productive rushing attack and timely defensive stops to overwhelm a UTSA team that struggled to contain Florida Atlantic's versatile offense.
Quarterback Caden Veltkamp directed the attack, while receiver Easton Messer and running back Leonard Farrow repeatedly created problems for the Roadrunners.
Florida Atlantic established an early advantage after Messer returned a punt 33 yards to the UTSA 6-yard line. Veltkamp capitalized with a touchdown pass, giving the Owls an early lead.
UTSA responded behind quarterback Owen McCown, who directed a 75-yard scoring drive that included an important fourth-down conversion. McCown eventually connected with receiver Myles Anderson for a touchdown to tie the game.
But Florida Atlantic's offense quickly found its rhythm.
Farrow broke through the UTSA defense for consecutive first downs, while the Owls incorporated creative formations and misdirection to keep defenders off balance.
One of the game's most impressive plays came when Messer took a backward pass and threw a touchdown to tight end AJ Johnson, demonstrating the versatility that made him difficult to defend throughout the evening.
Farrow continued producing substantial gains on the ground, including a 33-yard run that helped set up another scoring opportunity.
UTSA answered with an explosive play of its own when Amari Peterson broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run, his 11th rushing score of the season.
However, Florida Atlantic maintained its offensive momentum.
Johnson scored again on a direct snap near the goal line, while Veltkamp continued finding receivers against a UTSA secondary that struggled with coverage assignments.
McCown kept the Roadrunners competitive with a 45-yard touchdown pass to Anderson, who found an opening in the defense and raced untouched into the end zone.
A failed two-point conversion prevented UTSA from reducing the deficit further.
The Roadrunners also missed a critical opportunity when their defense stopped Johnson just short of the goal line on fourth down, forcing a turnover on downs.
Despite that defensive stand, UTSA could not establish consistent momentum.
Florida Atlantic extended its advantage when Veltkamp connected with Farrow on a remarkable touchdown reception that deflected off a defender before reaching the running back.
The Owls' defense then forced a fumble on a UTSA screen play, setting up another Johnson touchdown.
UTSA continued fighting.
McCown connected with DJ Allen Jr. and Anderson for substantial gains before the Roadrunners used a fourth-down trick play to score. Peterson delivered a short jump pass to Isaiah Butler, trimming the deficit to 43-28.
But Florida Atlantic answered again with another rushing touchdown by Farrow, who had accumulated 139 yards on just 12 carries at that point.
The Owls' ground attack was particularly notable because it entered the contest averaging approximately 110 rushing yards per game. Against UTSA, Florida Atlantic surpassed 275 yards on the ground.
Messer added another touchdown contribution late in the contest, completing an outstanding individual performance.
Florida Atlantic's defense also deserves credit for disrupting McCown throughout the game. Jonathan Bax recorded three sacks, while the Owls forced turnovers and repeatedly pressured the Roadrunners' offensive line.
Penalties further complicated UTSA's efforts, with multiple personal fouls extending Florida Atlantic possessions.
The victory kept the Owls in the American Conference race and gave the program its first 5-0 home record.
For UTSA, the defeat exposed continuing concerns about road performance, defensive consistency and penalties.
The Roadrunners now turn their attention to a critical home matchup against North Texas at the Alamodome, where they will attempt to regain momentum in the conference standings.
