Welcome Back to San Antonio's Quirk Fest: Cornyation
As spring breezes into San Antonio, bringing with it the joyous chaos of Fiesta season, the beloved tradition known as Cornyation returns for its 75th year. Slated for April 21-23 at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, this three-night spectacle is a dazzling blend of satire, performance art, and profound community spirit that promises more glitter than most craft stores can contain.
Originally conceived in 1951, Cornyation was created by a group of local theater aficionados to poke fun at the more formal traditions of Fiesta, such as the Coronation of the Queen of the Order of the Alamo. With a tongue-in-cheek tone, it highlights the absurdities of local and national politics, celebrity culture, and the serious challenges in our communities. “What Russell Hill Rogers and Joe Salek launched has become a cultural anchor of our community,” states Fiesta Cornyation Board member Jesse Mata. “Every year, we challenge ourselves to raise the bar.”
The Heart of Fiesta: Community and Charity
Cornyation is not just a show; it is a formidable fundraiser that has raised over $5 million for various local charities, including the San Antonio AIDS Foundation and the Pride Community Clinic. The organization actively supports HIV/AIDS education and LGBTQ+ causes, making this event a vital part of San Antonio’s cultural landscape. This year, audiences will enjoy performances that combine sharp political commentary with engaging, often hilarious skits performed by an all-volunteer cast, showcasing the area's remarkable creative talent.
“Since its inception, Cornyation has been a platform for raising awareness about important issues while having fun,” elaborates board member Marty Schlesinger. “We aim to not only entertain but also uplift the community.” In a city well-known for its vibrant cultural events, Cornyation exemplifies the spirit of inclusion and diversity that defines San Antonio.
A Unique Lens on Political Landscape
This year's Cornyation, themed The Court of Chaotic Wisdom, promises to be particularly poignant, as it aligns with current events involving Texas politics. With the state legislature in session and an array of controversial bills being debated, performers are ready to craft skits that reflect the evolving political landscape. As scriptwriter Mata asserts, “As news breaks, we edit and add material, making sure the content remains fresh and relevant.”
Cornyation has survived ups and downs, including its cancellation in the mid-1960s and a revival in the ‘80s. The survival of this tradition speaks volumes about the resilience of the San Antonio community, where collective laughter has become a potent means of addressing societal issues. It also emphasizes the role of the LGBTQ+ community in shaping local culture, providing a platform that many other events lack.
What Makes Cornyation Special?
Tributes to Cornyation’s legacy can be felt across the San Antonio River Walk during Fiesta, where numerous activities—from parades to street fairs—celebrate local culture. From its humble beginnings as a parody of elitism to its current status as a major highlight in the Fiesta lineup, Cornyation represents a more inclusive and diverse San Antonio.
For those in attendance, it’s more than just an event; it’s an experience that awakens laughter, joy, and perhaps a few challenging thoughts about our society. As Jesse Mata beautifully puts it, “We are a diverse community, we are an accepting community. Cornyation is a celebration for everyone.”
