Experience the Magic of Night Kayaking on the San Antonio River
As December approaches, locals and visitors alike can look forward to a unique holiday experience—the Holly Jolly Kayaking event on the San Antonio River, set for two nights in early December. This much-anticipated event, returning for its fourth year, invites participants to paddle among stunning holiday lights illuminating the Museum Reach of the river, offering an enchanting way to embrace the festive season.
Why You Shouldn’t Miss This Unique Event
Scheduled for December 3 and December 10, the Holly Jolly Kayaking adventure promises an incredible experience as you paddle under the glimmering lights of the city. "This event not only highlights the beauty of our historic structures from the water, but it also fosters community spirit," says Stewart Bittle, a park program coordinator with the San Antonio River Authority (SARA). As guests glide along the water after sunset, they can enjoy a view that few get to see—an unforgettable perspective of San Antonio’s vibrant landscape.
What to Expect and How to Prepare
The two-night kayaking experience allows participants to borrow a SARA kayak for a $15 fee or bring their own, free of charge; however, all attendees must register in advance. With limited spots—30 kayaks available for rental and 50 spots for those using their own boats—interest is expected to be high. Registration opens at 10 a.m. on November 22, and attendees are encouraged to act quickly, as tickets historically sell out fast.
Even if you miss out on a ticket, there’s still a chance to experience the waterway; kayaks must be claimed by 7 p.m. on the event nights, at which point any unclaimed kayaks will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
A Community Celebration of the Season
Attending the Holly Jolly Kayaking event is more than just a paddle; it's an opportunity to connect with the community and celebrate the holiday spirit together. The river is expected to be buzzing with activity, as pedestrians and fellow boaters enjoy the festive atmosphere. This vibrant community event is a chance to join friends, family, and new acquaintances in a beautiful setting while soaking in the twinkling lights and the sounds of the season.
The Beauty of the Museum Reach
For those unfamiliar with the Museum Reach, this section of the San Antonio River runs through an area enriched with cultural landmarks and natural beauty. Paddlers will glide past the San Antonio Museum of Art and other historic sites, providing a scenic backdrop to the experience. Witnessing the reflections of holiday lights on the water creates a magical ambience that transforms a simple outing into a memorable adventure.
Celebrate Responsibly
Safety is a priority during the event; all participants must wear life jackets, and those bringing their own watercraft are reminded to ensure they have appropriate safety gear. Bittle encourages everyone to follow safety protocols, ensuring the event remains enjoyable and accessible for all ages.
Join in the Festivities!
As the countdown to registration begins, locals should prepare to mark their calendars for this exciting holiday tradition. Not only does the kayaking event celebrate the winter season, but it also showcases the community’s commitment to environmental stewardship and appreciation of the San Antonio Riverway.
