Celebrating Animal Lives at AniFab 2025
As Thanksgiving approaches, the heart of San Antonio is set to beat to a different rhythm, one that champions animal life and conservation through the magic of film. The Animalis Fabula Film Festival, or AniFab, returns for its 2025 edition, promising a captivating weekend at the historic Woodlawn Theater on November 28-29. Known for uniting the best in animal film with vital advocacy, this year’s festival invites attendees to partake in a global dialogue about the issues facing our furry friends.
A Cinematic Extravaganza Showcasing the Animal Kingdom
Festival Director, Tom McPhee, expresses excitement about the venue shift to the magnificent, 1,000-seat Woodlawn Theater, which will turn into a hub for filmmakers from around the globe, local advocates, and special guests including renowned animal welfare advocate, Dr. Temple Grandin.
Launched in 2014, AniFab presents a compelling lineup of films aimed at raising awareness about conservation, humane treatment, and the diverse stories of animals worldwide. The festival features 25 films ranging from poignant documentaries to imaginative animated shorts. Highlights include:
The Invisible Mammal – A deep dive into the role of bats in Texas ecosystems.
Mobula: The Devil’s Legend – A French exploration of the majestic mobula rays.
Shepherd Boy – A heartwarming narrative about the love of stray dogs in Qatar.
And an adorable animated short depicting the life of the Taiwanese fiddler crab.
Dr. Temple Grandin: A Beacon of Hope
Dr. Grandin, celebrated for her invaluable contributions to animal science and welfare, will headline the festival with a special screening of her acclaimed documentary, Temple Grandin: An Open Door. This screening will be followed by a engaging Q&A session where attendees can glean insights into her groundbreaking work.
Moreover, young star Romy Fay will bring her charm to the festival, presenting a selection of animated episodes from The Chosen Adventures, coordinated in the spirit of localdog advocacy, with the beloved God’s Dogs Rescue.
Workshops and Community Engagement
Beyond film screenings, AniFab promotes active dialogue and learning. A series of workshops focuses on timely topics, including a panel discussion addressing San Antonio’s persistent stray dog crisis. Moderated by Michael Karlis, this conversation will center on systemic issues that threaten local animal welfare.
The festival’s goal is clear: to blend high-caliber cinematic art with pressing community needs, ensuring that attendees leave with not just a renewed passion for animals, but also actionable insights.
